Virtual BioEYES Modules

Thank you for taking part in Virtual BioEYES! Click the links below to make a copy of the presentation you will be using. All modules come in a Pear Deck version and a "Zeebo" version that the students complete directly in Google Slides. Both versions can be done synchronously or asynchronously.

Zeebo the Zebrafish tells students when to switch modes in Google Slides so they can enter their answers

Micro Modules

The Micro program uses the zebrafish to talk about habitats, the needs of embryos, anatomical comparisons between humans and fish, and heart functions. In the process, students also discuss the scientific method and do lots of observations of live fish and embryos. Suitable for 4th/5th grades.

Intermediate Modules

These modules introduce zebrafish and their use in science, then lead the students through a simple Mendelian genetics experiment using zebrafish pigment mutants. Suitable for introducing the material for 7th/8th grade level students and for reviewing or reinforcing it with high school students.

Advanced Modules

These modules introduce zebrafish and their use in science, then lead the students through a Mendelian genetics experiment to determine the genotypes of zebrafish pigment mutants by observing the phenotypes of their offspring. Suitable for high school or advanced middle school students.

  • This module discusses cholesterol: what it is, where it comes from, and its affect on health, as well as how zebrafish can be used to help develop new medications. It also goes into the steps a new drug must go through to be approved for use, and touches on how this affected the development of the COVID-19 vaccines. This is designed to follow the Advanced Genetics modules.

    Module 4 (Pear Deck, synchronous)

AP Modules

These modules introduce zebrafish and their use in science, then lead the students through a genetics experiment to determine the inheritance pattern of zebrafish pigment mutants, with in-depth discussion of vertebrate embryo development. Suitable for upper-level Honors or AP high school students.

Fish Dynamics Modules

The Fish Dynamics modules build upon our Intermediate or Advanced Genetics modules for middle or high school students. They discuss experimental design, data collection, and graphing. Students use these skills to set up a virtual experiment to determine how temperature affects zebrafish embryo development. The Zeebo module is presented in a single file so the students can check back to their earlier data, but is still intended to be done over three class periods. It also includes two graph templates the students can use to create line graphs of their data. Both versions are meant to be done synchronously.
